The Spring Festival, also known as Chinese New Year, is the most important traditional festival for the Chinese people, marking the beginning of the lunar new year.
Origin and Legend
The Spring Festival originated from the year-end sacrificial ceremonies in ancient times. Legend has it that the “Nian” beast would come out to harm people on New Year’s Eve, so people used red decorations and firecrackers to drive it away.
Traditional Customs
- Red Decorations – Red lanterns, red couplets, symbolizing good luck
- Firecrackers – Driving away evil spirits and welcoming the new year
