Zhangjiajie Glass Bridge: Walking on Air in China
The Zhangjiajie Glass Bridge (张家界玻璃桥) spans 430 meters across a canyon, suspended 300 meters above the forest floor. The entire thing is made of transparent glass. Walking across it feels like flying.
Located in Hunan province, Zhangjiajie National Forest Park was the inspiration for the floating mountains in James Cameron’s Avatar. The glass bridge, opened in 2016, is the world’s highest and longest glass-bottomed bridge. It can hold up to 800 people at once, though it’s rarely that crowded.
Pro tip: go early to avoid the crowds (opens 7:30am). Wear flat shoes. Don’t wear a skirt — the glass floor means everyone below can see up. If you’re afraid of heights, start by inching along the edge where the structure is visible, then work your way to the center.
