Huangshan: China’s Most Beautiful Mountain
Huangshan (黄山, Yellow Mountain) has been called “the loveliest mountain in China” by travelers for over 1,000 years. Chinese painters have been trying to capture its granite peaks, twisted pine trees, and seas of clouds for centuries — it’s the single most painted subject in Chinese art. The reality matches the reputation.
The mountain has 72 peaks, with the tallest at 1,864 meters. The iconic sights are the “Four Wonders”: strange pines growing from sheer rock faces; oddly shaped rocks (like the “Monkey Gazing at the Sea”); seas of clouds that fill the valleys below; and hot springs. The sunrise from the East Sea scenic area is legendary. The “Welcome Pine” at the foot of Jade Screen Peak is the most photographed tree in China.
The classic hike takes 2 days: take the cable car up, walk the West Sea Grand Canyon (a 5km loop trail with vertiginous cliffside paths), stay overnight in a mountain lodge, watch the sunrise, and descend via the east stairs. The mountain lodges are basic (shared rooms, no heating) but essential for the sunrise. Book ahead — they fill up months in advance.
